Angola's cultural norms and safety tips

Greetings are essential

Always greet people with a polite “Bom Dia” (Good morning) “Boa Tarde” (Good afternoon) or “Ola” (Hi) especially before any transaction or question. Taking time for pleasantries is important in Angola.

Dress respectfully

Angolan dress well and take pride in their appearance. Take note when doing a city tour in Luanda. visiting government building, churches or tribal villages – avoid mini-skirts, sleeveless tops or shorts.

Photography Sensitivities

Never photograph government buildings, military installations, police or airports, this can lead to some serious trouble with the law. Always ask permission before photographing people.

Movement and Transportation

Do not walk alone at night, even if a place seems close by. As your agent, we are on hand to provide all your private transportation needs. The local transport system is not up to internation standards.

Wi-Fi and Communication

Purchase a local SIM card from Unitel for most coverage upon arrival at the airport, load it with Data and Call option. Free Wi-Fi is available in your hotel and during some transit periods. Take note that in the Namib Desert there is no Wi-Fi, this is a very remote part of the country. Restaurants and public spaces do not provide Wi-Fi, so having Data on your local SIM will come in handy. Angola’s dialling code is +244.

Health & Hygiene

Do not drink tap water, even from your hotel room. Only drink bottled water, even for brushing your teeth as well. Be cautious with street food, we do not recommend it, especially if your stomach is sensitive & you have dietary requirements.

Medical Care

Comprehensive travel insurance with medical evacuation is non-negotiable. Luanda has a few private clinics which are very expensive.

ATM & Currency

Only use ATMs inside banks, hotels or shopping malls. The local currency is the Angolan Kwanza (AOA) carry small denominations. USD or Euros can be exchanged at the airport, banks or your hotel.
